Briefings on Peasants Rights

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day 2015, FIAN International published three analytical briefings. These are part of a series dedicated to feed into negotiations around the text for the future UN Declaration on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas.

The notes provide a brief introduction to a series of rights as well as their definition. A discussion follows on the obligations of States as well as the sources of international law where the recognition of the these rights lies, and within the context of peasants and other people working in rural areas. The briefings then review the rationale for the inclusion of such rights in the draft Declaration and identify key elements that should be included in its text.

The briefings are on the following topics:

The right to food

The right to land and other natural resources

The right to sovereignty over natural resources, development and food sovereignty.

To deepen the issues of the Declaration, FIAN Belgium also released a video (in French, soon available in English and Spanish)
